Whenever I hear a modern country music song, especially something like Garth Brooks, I think it's a parody of itself. For the first 30 seconds I'm not sure if it's a serious song or something Weird Al Yankovic did. You might think that this is a criticism of country music, but remember that I kind of like Weird Al.

Search Engine MadnessJune 3, 2001 00:00 (by RustyBrooks)
Sometimes I'll go to a search engine and try to see if I can find my website on it. It's harder than you might think. If I search for things that I know are on my website, like greece or the middle east, photography, etc, I get inundated with stuff that's not me. Even if I include my name in the search.

Yet, people find my site through web search engines. But I can't see how. Here's some of the more popular, and funny, searches:

  • Rusty Messenger Bags
  • german atrocities in greece
  • Angela Little
  • translate greek to english while traveling in greece
  • Rusty's Thumbs
  • Rusty Dragon

In this case, the search engine screwed both me and the searcher. It's not as if someone looking for photos of Angela Little is going to stick around to read about my trip to the middle east, nor is it likely someone looking to find out about german atrocities in greece is going to want to look at my comics page. A waste of time for everyone involved.

Every day on the way to work, and on the way home from work, I am mocked by a joint carwash and oil change place. When I got a car, it was supposed to be something to set me free, but instead it shackles me with many fruity-flavored varieties of shame and postponement. I promise, I'll change your oil soon, and give you a good washing. Just be patient...

Got back from houston the other day, so here's the highlights from the trip

First of all, it took me nearly 3 hours to get to the airport. Yeah, it's about 30 or 40 miles. Saw some interesting stuff on the way though. Like a woman reading a magazing in traffic. Or a BMW that had two people in it, both talking on cell phones. The driver was dialing yet another cellphone, while talking on the first one. Incredible.

Got delayed in dallas for many an hour. Sandy was a dear and waited at the airport for me until 2am when I was supposed to be there around 11pm. We drove back to her apartment and stayed up talking about stuff until it was light out, and then collapsed.

On sunday Sandy and I went to lunch with her parents, Thai food, yum. We went to see Atom and His Package with Curtis at Rice, and ran into Mitch and Brian, no huge surprise there. The first act was "Filthy McNasty" which was sort of a guy singing soulish-music to a drum machine. It was pretty interesting, but the most amazing part was in the beginning of the show when he pointed to Sandy and I, and said "I'm talking to you, Sandy Mulkey". I turned to her and asked if he'd just said her name, 'cause I wasn't sure. She nodded and gave me a look; I think she assumed I'd set her up and told him to do that. Later in the show, when he was sort of singing about people he knew in high school, and how he was glad they were successful, he came over to her (he was walking around in the "crowd" singing) and said her name again. After the show we talked to him, apparently he was friends with Franka Potente, who was a foreign exchange student who stayed with Sandy when she was in high school, and he had just recognised her. Way cool. Har Mar Superstar and Atom and His Package were lots of fun, although I had a pounding headache at the end and was glad to go home.

I spent Monday night with my mom, sister, brother-in-law, sandy, and most importantly, my 3 year old niece Katy. Haven't seen her since around christmas and it's always great to hang out with her for a while. She wears us all out, of course, but she's totally cute and I'm glad that I can spend some time with her.

One of those days, don't remember which, Sandy's friends Cisco and Denise (a really cute couple, by the way) came over and we all got a little toasted. Cisco and I had a lot in common, so it was nice to talk to someone about movies, music, The Simpsons, all the good things in life.

Saw my mom briefly on Mother's Day, talked about pleasant things like Death and Dying. Well, mostly we talked about my grandfather's preparations for his (eventual) passing, distributing of his stuff, etc. He's such a sweet man, and wants to see everything fairly distributed.

Barely, and I mean Just Barely, made it to my flight... we were a little late to start with, and the parking lot for terminal A (where my flight was) was closed, as was terminal B. We parked in C, took the way-too-slow train to A, and had to run carrying all my bags to my gate. After a way-too-hurried goodbye I got on the plane, prayed that someone would actually pick up my luggage and put it on the plane (they told me to just leave it next to this "door" in the hallway. Finally arrived back in LA and there the story ends.

While I was gone, my cat learned how to meow. All the damn time. She also learned how to purr a lot too, though, and she spent most of her first night back sleeping next to my head or under the sheet near my feet. Too damn cute.

Well, today I head for Houston, TX, to spend 9 days back in texas, visiting my friends, family, and most importantly, Sandy. I can hardly wait to get there, just a few more hours until I leave, and a few more until I'll actually arrive.

This morning is a pretty tricky schedule, between finishing the packing, getting alex to the cat kennel, getting some of her papers from the vet, going to work of all things. Have to be back here at around 12:30pm, ready to go.

So, I better get to it.

Due to a recent supreme court decision I can now be legally referred to as "Captain Profanity". Just "Captain" to my friends.

In other news I am no longer afraid of belly-button lint.

Well, I made a few changes, although of course at this instant this site is still not back online.

First, I changed the login and user creation software a bit. If you had problems before give it a try, and let me know how it goes.

Second I added a Jokes section to the message board. Feel free to add your own jokes and read the ones there. Let me know if you need a new joke category added and I'll do so.

Well, it's the triumphant return of my website. Sort of. When rustybrooks.org got shipped to me from dallas it arrived not working. After replacing the CPU and motherboard it's up and running again. However, as I write this, I don't have a place to park it, so it'll probably live on my DSL connection at home until I find a better place (anyone offering space?)

If this proves to be really slow I might upgrade to the 384kbs upstream speed. Any comments on speed? I guess one benefit is that it won't matter how crappy the CPU of this machine is.

Lots of stuff to do around here, and I don't really feel like doing much of it. But I guess I probably will... stuff to get packed, stuff to get mailed, financial calculations to be made (can I make it through the next couple of weeks?!).

Saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last night, and it was great. As everyone knows, the martial arts choreography was great, but the story line was pretty decent, and it managed to get in a couple of laughs, too. It had sort of a Star Wars feel to it, albeit in medieval China. I'll probably end up buying it on DVD.

Also, I heard there's an Oliver Stone DVD box set out, with 6 or 10 dvds, depending on which you get. Wow... I might have to get ahold of that.
