| Artificial Music Machine | August 28, 2002 14:38 (by RustyBrooks) | |
A friend of mine in Austin, Dan Burton, has started an independant record label, artificial music machine, which I already knew, but has himself made some music on the label, which I did not know. I'm listening to it right now, and it's actually quite interesting. You should all check it out. The label appears to have events every now again, which unfortunately I have never attended.

| In Other News | July 17, 2002 09:31 (by RustyBrooks) | |
I am moving back to Dallas again soon. It's hard to believe that I lived there only 2 years ago. So much has happened since then. Sandy and I will be living in Post Addison Circle, which is, of course, in Addison, on the north west side of Dallas, very close to where I work. To all of my friends in Houston who I didn't even get a chance to visit when I was living there, I'm sorry. On the plus side, we'll have an honest-to-goodness guest room in the new apartment and you should all come visit us.

| Clap Trap Hotel | July 17, 2002 09:26 (by RustyBrooks) | |
I stayed in the Worlds Worst Hotel last night. I didn't even know places like this existed. It was filthy. There were huge stains on the floor, walls, bathroom, etc. There were cigarette burns everywhere, including hundreds on the edge of the bathtub, which I can not imagine anyone actually sitting in and using in the last few decades. The mirrors were stained yellow with nicotine. There was evidence that people have not only stayed in the room, but lived there in recent years, like the places where photographs had been attached to walls and mirros with double sided tape or some kind of glue. The television was the kind with no remote, just a knob. It had a little cable box tuner tied to the bottom of it with and old telephone cord. There was no air conditioning. If it hadn't been midnight, and if I hadn't been afraid I'd drive off the road driving another few miles to another hotel, I would have left, even if I never got my money back. I almost want to go there again so I can take pictures and show people.

| MSN Messenger API | July 9, 2002 14:30 (by RustyBrooks) | |
For the hell of it, I wrote an MSN Instant Messenger API in Tcl. It basically lets you write simple programs that can interact with the MSN server and other users. I wrote a sample application that provides translation services (via babelfish.altavista.com) as a proof-of-concept. You can contact the bot on msn. It's "passport" is major_glory_hole@hotmail.com. Don't bother sending it email, it won't get read. Anyway, do log into MSN and say hi to the Major, or me (rustybrooks@hotmail.com)

| This Weekend | May 29, 2002 15:05 (by RustyBrooks) | |
I was gone all weekend, in Dallas nominally to visit my friend, Lee, who was home from Illinois for a while. I say nominally because shortly before we left we found out that Sandy's sister, Katy, was going to the hospital on Tuesday to give birth, one way or another. So we spent some of the time up there (trying) to take Katy's existing two kids, Hunter and Dylan, ages 4 and 2, off her hands. It's hard work. At any rate, we still got to spend plenty of time with Lee and we spent something like 10 hours yesterday in the hospital, waiting for Katy to give birth to her first daughter, Kira. The baby was in the breach position to start, and turned on the second attempt, which took most of the morning. In the evening, Katy started dilating and the actual birth took place very soon afterwards. We all got a good look (and lots of pictures) at the new baby and then left Katy and Craig, her husband, alone. Sandy and I started driving home last night but stopped somewhere in between Dallas and Houston to sleep, and came back this morning.

| Kitty Medicine | May 24, 2002 12:42 (by RustyBrooks) | |
I took Alex, my cat, into the vet's today to try a new treatment for her asthma. She had been taking Prednisone for some time now, with a greatly diminishing result. She went from taking in once a week with little or no symptoms (in fact, the first sign of a wheeze was my signal to give her more) to having it every day, along with Theophylline, a broncho-dilator, and still having coughing and wheezing symptoms. Anyway, now we're trying cortisone injections, which are reputed to last 4-8 weeks and supress nearly all symptoms. It's only been a few hours but my god what a change! She's much more playful, following me around and "talking" to me. She even jumped up on the sink and demanded to have a drink, which she ALWAYS used to do, but has not done in months, maybe a year, probably just because of general listlessness. I'm optimistic.

| Star Wars Episode II | May 19, 2002 09:43 (by RustyBrooks) | |
We went to see Attack of the Clones on Friday. I was Not Impressed. It was too long. The dialogue was impossibly sappy for VERY LONG periods of time. The special effects were very well done of course but pretty overwhelming. The acting was for the most part quite terrible. I just kept looking at my watch hoping it would be over. I think this one was even worse that "The Phantom Menace", which I did not think was particularly good either.

| Time for an intervention? | May 7, 2002 14:25 (by RustyBrooks) | |
I've been growing some herbs on the balcony recently, and one of the ones I bought to plant was catnip. They say, along with delighting cats, that it's good in salad and you can make a tea out of it. The other day when I went to plant all my seeds, I couldn't find the catnip. Still can't. I don't know what to think except that my drug addled cat ran off with it. Cisco advised me to keep my eyes open for grow lights and Allman Brothers posters among my kitten's possessions.
